Detailed Fight Breakdown:
John Marsh def. Mike Van Arsdale
Summary: This was the only preliminary fight of the three that didn't air in full-length on the pay-per view. They showed some highlights, and made it look like a closely fought battle. Van Arsdale edged out Marsh by a score of 29-28 from all three judges, so that means Van Arsdale won two rounds to one.
Joe Doerksen def. Patrick Cote
Summary: I didn't pay much attention to the prelims due to the shock of the Couture/Liddell fight. I'll have to re-watch the tape. From what I saw and what I remember of what I saw, Cote was doing really good with striking on his feet, landing good body punches, some devestating head punches, and even some kicks and knees. Doerksen eventually got the win, after hitting the ground a few times during the fight, he finally catches Cote with a rear-naked choke submission for the tap out victory in the third and final round.
Ivan Salaverry def. Joe Riggs
Summary: This was the last prelim fight. Riggs did good early, but eventually got caught in the middle of the first round by Salaverry on the ground with a submission. Salaverry got Riggs in a triangle choke for the tap out victory in round one.
Georges St. Pierre def. Jason Miller
Summary: This was the pay-per view opener. Good fight. It went the distance, with St. Pierre winning a unanimous decision victory over a very game Jason "Mayhem" Miller. Miller came in crazy, throwing money around during his walk to the octagon. He was getting dominated throughout most of the fight, spilling quite a bit of blood, but keeping a smile on his face throughout, and even coming close with submissions a few times. He even got a couple of good reversals. St. Pierre was too strong and skilled in the end though, and came out with the decisive judges victory after three full rounds of action.
Matt Lindland def. Travis Lutter
Summary: Not a bad fight here either. Lindland pulls off the upset, not that he won, but the fashion in which he won. He caught the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Lutter with a submission hold, the guillotine choke, for the tap out victory in round number two. Lindland controlled most of the fight, with Lutter having a few good moments of his own. After the fight, Lindland called out anyone wanting to fight, as he was passed over for the next UFC Middleweight title shot when it will be Evan Tanner defending for the first time at UFC 53 against Rich Franklin, who just defeated Ken Shamrock and is coming back down to 185 lbs. for the rematch with Tanner, who he defeated over a year ago.
Matt Hughes def. Frank Trigg
Summary: Probably the fight of the night. Fight started with the two doing a lot of wrestling, trying to take the other person down. Trigg landed an accidental knee to the groin, Hughes was visibly hurt and looking for the referee to give him a minute to recover, but didn't get it and Trigg immediately jumped on the hurt Hughes and nearly knocked him out. He rocked him good standing with several powerful shots, had him on the ground and was in top position, and was hammering down hard punches and elbows. He tried submitting him a few time with a rear naked choke, and came very close, but Hughes escaped and got on top. Hughes then reigned down some ground and pound of his own, and followed up with the submission victory, securing the rear-naked choke to win by tap out late in round one, the exact same way he defeated Trigg in their first fight at UFC 45. After the fight, Hughes responded to Matt Lindland's challenge earlier in the night, saying he'd step up and fight him (Hughes fights at 170 lbs., Lindland is at 185 lbs.) or that his teammate the very busy Jeremy Horn would be pleasured to step in for the fight as well. Horn is ranked in the top 5 at 185 lbs., along with Lindland, so I like that match as a set up for the winner of Tanner/Franklin at UFC 53. It only makes sense. Now, we'll sit back and await Lindland/Terrell II, or Lindland/Baroni IV instead. What's with the hating on Jeremy Horn?
Renato Sobral def. Travis Wiuff
Summary: This was a battle at Light Heavyweight - 205 lbs., with two former Heavyweight fighters. Wiuff coming way down from something like 250 lbs., while Sobral has been very dominant at 185/205 lbs. lately, with wins over Shogun Rua, Jeremy Horn, Trevor Prangley, and many others. He's known in the UFC circle mainly for his knockout loss to Chuck Liddell on the undercard of the mega Ken Shamrock/Tito Ortiz fight from back in 2002 at UFC 40. Tonight, he fought a very big strong wrestler, who he somewhat out-wrestled. He landed some good elbows as well, and eventually got the win with the armbar submission in round two.
Chuck Liddell def. Randy Couture
Summary: This is the one that everyone paid to see. The two "legendary coaches" from the SpikeTV reality show, "The Ultimate Fighter" produced by the UFC will battle it out in the octagon in a rematch from their UFC 43 fight to determine the undisputed Light Heavyweight champion of the world. Couture came in shredded as usual, despite coming in at 41 years old. Liddell came in looking his usual self, in pretty good shape but soft in the middle. Liddell came in looking very relaxed though, and started the first round of aggressive. He wasn't as shy about letting his hands go as he was the first time, proving truth to the theory that he was timid in letting his hands go the first time they fought because he didn't want to give up the takedown. This time, realizing he's probably going to be taken down at some point anyway, he let his hands fly and never had to worry about the ground, except for when he jumped on Couture on the ground with two devestating punches to finish up what was an incredible knockout victory. Liddell caught Couture very hard and flush with a left hand that stunned "The Natural." Liddell being the finishing type fighter that he is, followed immediately with a crushing hook that viciously dropped Couture, and then followed it up with two more punches once Couture was already out, for the referee stoppage. Chuck Liddell is the new 205 lb. Light Heavyweight champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
News From The Show:
-UFC will be producing another season of the popular reality show, "The Ultimate Fighter" and will again air on the SpikeTV network. Without the novelty attention from being a new type of reality show, and the lead-in from WWE RAW every week (RAW will officially be off SpikeTV once the second season is ready to begin airing on cable) it will be interesting to see if the show holds up in the ratings department for a second season. UFC president Dana White announced this time it would be Heavyweight (up to 265 lbs.) and Welterweight (170 lb.) fighters.
-For UFC 53 we'll have interim Heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski defending his version of the world title against Militech fighter Justin Eilers. On the undercard, Evan Tanner will make the first defense of his 185 lb. (Middleweight) title against Rich Franklin, the man who just beat Ken Shamrock and previously gave Tanner his last loss in the UFC. Matt Serra vs. Karo Parisyan is also rumored, but wasn't made official on the show. We'll likely have the full UFC 53 card up late tonight, from the UFC 52 post-fight press conference, where Dana White usually announces the full card for the next pay-per view.
-And as always, keep up to the date with UFC, PRIDE, K-1, and anything else mixed-martial arts related at the best website for coverage on the sport, www.MMANews.com.
