Live 360: Create-a-Player
Screens, video, and info on creating your own next-gen baller.
by Jon Robinson
October 28, 2005 - Chris Mullin. He's my favorite all-time NBA player, and it has been a while since I could pop three pointers with him in a videogame. I can always plug in my Genesis and Run TMC is at my fingertips, but I want someone who looks like Chris Mullin, from the trademark flattop to the black sneakers screeching the floor.
With NBA Live 06 for the Xbox 360, I might finally have my chance to make the man who shot his way onto the Dream Team (and the only real Dream Team at that). The game looks to deliver the most in-depth create-a-player feature in any basketball game to date, and the results could be big for Golden State.
Tim Tschirner, Producer, NBA Live 06 for the Xbox 360 took time out of his schedule to breakdown the new feature for us before we get our hands-on demo next week.
IGN Sports: We've heard about how NBA Live on Xbox 360 will ship without some of the standard features of the current gen version, like the Dynasty Mode and All-Star Weekend. What made you decide to include Create Player?
Tim Tschirner: That's a great question. As you can imagine, it wasn't easy for us to have to cut modes from the game that we know have been favorites of the fans of this series. But when we started out development of this game we knew that we were going to have to make some hard decisions, but we also knew that we had to go with the core part of the game that our fans have most appreciated and wanted in their game over the years. In order to make a game that was going to look next gen, feel next gen, and play next gen we had to focus on what was ultimately going to put the game that most reinvented the sport of basketball on the market.
With that being our mission, we knew we had to get the core gameplay right of the 5-on-5 experience, we knew we wanted to have an online experience that for the first time ever with this game could pit gamers in Germany against gamers in Dallas if they so decided, and we knew that Create Player and Season Mode were musts. With the Season Mode, we're able to offer a lasting experience with good, sound logic and a great simulation engine. And finally, Create Player is a feature that allows fans to put themselves in the game, put their friends in the game and recreate past basketball heroes who may not appear in the game. Everyone has a favorite player from year's past, and Create Player opens up that opportunity.
IGN Sports: What can we expect to see in Create Player for Xbox 360 and how is it different than what we've seen in previous editions of Live?
Tim Tschirner: Just as with all the other features of the game, from the new visual presentation and player models to the new immersive experience of being "in the game all the time" right from the startup menu, we wanted Create Player to feel next gen. We constantly asked ourselves as a development team "Does this feel next gen?" and if it didn't pass the test then it wasn't going to make it into the game.
To make this feature feel next gen we knew we needed to reinvent it for NBA Live. Now you use the right and left sticks on the controller to create details to the face as you adjust such things as nose types, positioning of your eyes, etc. It's in a similar spirit to some of the options you've seen in some of the other EA Sports games over the past few years, but now with our new camera system and our new graphics and visual presentation you really get to see all that detail that brings the players to life in the game. The point is that there is so much detail and so many options now that you really are able to replicate yourself or your friends to almost every last detail. It becomes almost an emotional experience.
IGN Sports: What are some of those details that really make it unique?
Tim Tschirner: There is so much cool stuff you can edit this year. You can adjust the tip of your nose, give your character a broken nose even, adjust the bags under the player's eyes, adjust where the eyes are on the head, affect whether you have a crooked mouth, etc. Basically, if you can think of it, it's possible. I'm really looking forward to fans getting their hands on it and really digging into the feature and having fun with it and being creative.
On top of what you can just do with the face, there's obviously a lot more. Picking out hairstyles - of which there are many new styles - is important with our animating hair in-game. There are nearly three times the body types available as in current gen and we even have a new attribute template that allows you to select the ratings of star players and model your player's stats around his attributes. In other words, if you want your character to play like LeBron but with just a slightly improved jumper, you can select LeBron's stats with the touch of a button and then just adjust from there. There's no guessing about what it takes to be a star. There are well over a dozen different stars to choose from when modeling your player, from Shaq to Kevin Garnett to Steve Nash or Kobe.
IGN Sports: Is there anything else that's worth noting in Create Player?
Tim Tschirner: I think it's going to really add to the experience for fans of the game. We know there is so much more we're going to be able to do over the years to this game and that we're merely scratching the surface, but it's an exciting time to be developing new games. We set out to try to showcase what the power of the Xbox 360 was going to be able to do for videogames and I think we've made great strides in year one.
I will tell you that we have one little secret in Create Player that will be a fun twist on how you create your character. We're making our final touches on it and we'll show it off next week.
