Growlanser V Announced
Atlus goes 3D for new installment.
by IGN Staff
October 27, 2005 - The next entry in the Growlanser series has been announced on the pages of this week's Famitsu, and it's coming to the PS2, from Atlus. Titled Growlanser V: Generations, this all-new entry is not to be confused with America's Growlanser Generations, a compilation of Growlanser I & II that Working Designs produced for American release last year.
With this new installment, Atlus has upped the technology for a series that has remained 2D since its debut in July of 1999. Characters are modeled in 3D for the first time, with the game no longer depicting Satoshi Urushibara's designs in super deformed style, opting instead for natural proportions. Backgrounds are pre-rendered, but have been created from a variety of angles. In addition to the 3D look, the game promises a seamless experience, with smooth transitions to battle.
Growlanser V seems to offer a mix of old and new as far as gameplay is concerned. The battle system remains fundamentally the same. Your goal is often not just to fight and defeat enemies, but to fulfill preset conditions, including protecting villagers and pursuing fleeing enemies. The game will have a character making feature, and although details are scarce, it seems that it will be more complex than the system featured in part IV.
The game's progression is a bit different this time around. As part of the new "Multi Role" system, Growlanser V's storyline is split into chapters, each with its own hero. Each episode in a chapter has some effect on the other chapters. Some directly effect the main storyline while others serve more as side stories. You'll be able to play the game without going through all the episodes.
Another late-life PlayStation 2 surprise, Growlanser V is currently without a final Japanese release date.
