Hex 168 Contest Details
Attend an X360 launch event.

October 28, 2005 - For those who've been turned off by the flood of viral marketing campaigns like the recent origen360 or the many before it, it turns out the Hex 168 contest is something different. Instead of just an engine to drive hype, the contest will reward gamers who are creative enough to come up with inventive ways to photograph themselves and friends together with the Hex 168 symbol.
If you decide to put forth the effort you'll have a chance to win tickets to an Xbox 360 launch event, full VIP treatment, and get an Xbox 360 around a week before everyone else. Full VIP treatment basically means you'll have your plane fare and hotel all paid for as well as VIP access to the event. What's important is that the winners of this contest are not determined by a random draw out of a hat, the entries are actually judged.
As for the actual event, we know a few details. The Xbox 360 launch event will take place somewhere out in the middle of a desert. Attending will be thousands of gamers from across the globe who have gathered to play X360 games on high definition monitors with full surround sound setups. In addition to food, drinks, and a unique Xbox 360 gift, those in attendance will be able to get a glimpse of several games that have yet to be unveiled.
There are three different categories for submissions involving one, six, or 30 people with a hex symbol. According to Chris DiCesare, Director of Xbox Marketing and the one in charge of the Unites States Hex entries, there have been over 1000 entries so far.
"A lot of the submissions have a kind of Weekly World News feel to them," says Mr. DiCesare. "Those larger categories probably have a better chance to win because of their fewer entries, but it takes more time to make them because you need to get six or thirty people together to qualify."
The contest plays out over several stages. "The first phase of the phase of the campaign is based upon fan voting on a one to ten scale and then it drops into a semifinals category and then we have a judging that's based upon a set criteria," says Mr. DiCesare. "While there's one, six and 30 [categories] it's a total number of 360 winners."
If you haven't heard of this contest yet, it's no surprise. "We honestly launched it intentionally in a covert way," says Mr. DiCesare, "it wasn't trying to be an ilovebees or a viral campaign. We didn't want to do the traditional banners and buttons and say "Hey, enter this contest," we wanted this to have more of an underground feel to it. We've been amazed we've had over 5,000,000 hits in over a week. We have Live entertainment, DJs, bands performing, food, drink, well have some other fun, crazy entertainment. The spirit of the Hex campaign is that you have to submit stuff that makes the mundane unusual. We wanted to try something truly different. What were trying to capture is kind of like Burning Man meets E3."
You'll have until November 4th to enter this contest, so if you want to get to the still mysterious desert launch party, your best bet is to get away from your monitor and go create something.
